We leave Kansas early in the morning, doesn’t take us long to get on the road. 400 turns into US Highway 50 and we head to Pueblo, Colorado. Should be a short day driving.
When we get to Pueblo, we can go two different ways to Eleven Mile State Park.
The longer route is to go up US Hwy 25 to Colorado City, then take 24 Hwy to Woodland Park, thru Divide and hang a left at Lake George.
The shorter route was to stay on 50 Hwy to Canon City, then up to Guffey and hang a right on County Road 102. We decide to take the shorter route…we were anxious to get there!!
Well, we made the WRONG decision. a few miles after we turned onto the county road, we had to make another left…this was a dirt road. The next 18 miles was the worst, roughest, most “wash-boardy” road we’ve been on. It took us FOREVER to get there. And poor Chris has to follow us! Ever crease, crack, crevice had dust in it!! It was Horrible!!
Never, ever take that route….ever! No way did we save 6 minutes!!
We finally get to Eleven Mile State Park. We notice a sign at the entrance that says all vehicles must have a “Day Pass”. So, we pull up and there is a Jeep parked in front of the self service kiosk. We wait, it still sits there. So, I get out and walk up to see what’s up.
The front driver’s side wheel is off, parts laying around and some dude laying under the jeep working on it. Don’t guess you’re gonna move soon. I say “howdy” and get my paper to fill out. It’s $8, we put the check in the box, put the sticker on the window. I go back and ask “dude” if he needs help, he says “no” Thank God and we move along.
We head to the RV park office. A sign out front says that all sites are by reservation only now…at all Colorado State Parks. GREAT! I go up, acknowledge that I’m doing this wrong, beg for a campsite. She says she can help us. Electric site is 20 some dollars. BUT, for every vehicle for every day, you have to pay the $8 day pass fee. Fantastic!
We head to the site. It’s on the side of a hill, no way I can get this trailer in there and get it level. So, we go back and I beg for another site. She obliges and we get a better site.
FINALLY, we can get set up, quit breathing dust and relax!
