Description

Near West Yellowstone, located on the Madison River famous for great fly fishing, spectacular scenery and wildlife viewing. Parks Website

We absolutely loved this place!! In the middle of the mountains, right next to one of the best trout streams in America! There is a fly shop and a great restaurant that is open for breakfast and lunch. Lots of wildlife and peace and quiet. Be prepared for no WiFi, cell service or am/fm radio!! It’s GREAT!

All the sites are in the trees with dirt or gravel sites. Several sites that are right next to the river…take 10 steps and fish!! Follow the dirt road to the left (Ghost Village Road) as you go out of the park, and there are several good fishing spots. You can also take a right back on the main road a couple hundred yards for some more good fishing spots. This part of the river is below the dam and stays cold. One fishing trip here, I was greeted by a bear that walked down to the water on the other side of the river. We watched each other for a few minutes, then he walked by up the hill!

There is another lake down the river that was formed from an earthquake in 1959. An earthquake near the Madison River triggered a massive landslide.  The slide moved at 100 mph and in less than 1 minute, over 80 million tons of rock crashed into the narrow canyon, blocking the Madison River and forming Earthquake Lake.  This earth- changing event, known as the Hebgen Lake Earthquake, measured 7.5 on the Richter scale.   At the time it was the second largest earthquake to occur in the lower 48 states in the 20th century. Twenty-eight people lost their lives in the event. On Ghost Village Road you can see some structures still that were torn apart by the initial flood.  Earthquake Visitor’s Center

Further to the west is the famous Three Dollar Bridge. Really good fishing here!!
